Gary Vaughan-Smith

 
Gary Vaughan-Smith is a founding partner of SilverStreet Capital. Between 2001 and 2006 he was Head of the Alternative Investment Group at ABN AMRO Asset Management responsible for alternative investment products. Over the five year period at ABN AMRO, Gary oversaw growth in assets from under $50m to over $5bn.

Between 1990 and 2001 Gary was at Gartmore Investments Ltd, initially heading the Quantitative Investment and Risk Consultancy teams.

In 1998 he became Head of the Global Portfolio Team, responsible for some $26bn in assets under management.

In 1986 Gary began his career in the Pensions Division at Southern Life Association in Cape Town and moved to the Investment Consultancy division of Sedgwick Noble Lowndes in 1989.

Gary is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries. He holds a Masters degree in Finance from Cambridge University and a BSc (Hons) in Mathematical Statistics from the University of Cape Town.


Edwin Doeg


Edwin Doeg joined SilverStreet in March 2008. Previously, he worked for Gartmore Investment Management Limited for 17 years between 1984 and 2002. He was head of the bancassurance and retail businesses, managing a team of approximately 50 staff with responsibilities covering clients in the U.K. and Europe. He was also a member of the management committee of Gartmore Fund Managers Limited.

In 2002, Edwin moved to Sweden and worked for the Skandia Group and as a consultant to ODIN Fonder, a niche Nordic fund management business. Prior to 1984, Edwin spent nine years with an import finance company, Gillespie Brothers Limited, establishing short term credit facilities for smaller companies in Australasia and other Pacific Basin countries.

Edwin holds a BA (Hons) from the University of East Anglia and a Master of Arts from Miami University.

 

Oliver St Clair Franklin OBE


Oliver St Clair Franklin is the manager for North America. He has over 20 years of experience on the institutional side of the investment business and experience in Southern Africa. As one of the Founding Partners of RISA (Reinvest in South Africa) Investment Advisors (2000-2003), the first US registered mutual fund to invest in the Johannesburg Stock exchange, he worked closely with the US and South African investment community. As the CEO of International House of Philadelphia (2003-08) he over saw the largest international community of students and scholars in the State of Pennsylvania.

Prior to RISA, he was a Senior Vice President at Fidelity Investments (1996-2000) and The Dreyfus Trust Company (1992-96). Oliver is Non Executive Chairman of Academy Asset Management and a Senior Advisor to Electronic Ink. He serves on many corporate and charitable boards including The Genisys Group, Dynamis Therapeutics, the Civil War Museum, and OIC International.

He is the Honorary British Consul in Philadelphia, Pa and received the OBE from Queen Elizabeth II in 2003. Oliver was educated at Lincoln University (PA) and Oxford (Balliol College) where he was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow.


Tim Denton


Tim Denton has extensive experience in the management of large commercial farms in Africa including the development of Greenfield sites and out-growers schemes.

Tim spent 10 years working for the Commonwealth Development Corp between 1986 and 1996. During this time he worked at Mpongwe in Zambia, widely considered as a “model” commercial farm in Africa. He managed a coffee estate at Mpongwe and also developed a green-field site at Nanga
to produce a range of crops including wheat, soya, cotton, coffee and sugar.

Tim then spent 9 years working for African Plantations between 1997 and 2005. He acted as Chief Operations Officer and was responsible for acquiring various plantation assets in Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania and Zimbabwe employing collectively over 20,000 people.

More recently Tim acted as an advisor to the establishment and development of a very large banana plantation in Northern Mozambique for Chiquita bananas. Tim helped in the selection of the 3000 hectare piece of land, water sources as well as the development of the business plan and execution.

Tim was educated at Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, UK and he is a Member of the Royal Agricultural College.


Kevin Liddle


Kevin worked for Accenture as a management consultant working across a variety of industries including the oil industry, government and retail.

In 2003 he joined a privately owned leisure company, African Encounter and subsequently became Managing Director. His responsibilities included sales, finance, operations and overall strategy. The company had 300 employees in six countries.

Kevin holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Economics and Information Systems from the University of Cape Town where he was admitted to the Dean’s Merit list in 1998, 1999 and 2000.


Harvey Leared


Harvey Leared possesses 20 years of work experience in the fields of agriculture, transport and logistics. He has also worked extensively on Public/Private Sector cooperation projects, in which he was involved at both a consultancy and managerial level. Key work assignments have included the restructuring, regional expansion and listing on the Stock Exchange of important transport and logistics operations in Zimbabwe.

Harvey spent 6 years as Chairman and CEO of Unifreight Limited (Zimbabwe’s largest transport and logistics corporation), where he was responsible for its material growth. He then joined Origen Corporation as Chief Executive Offcier and was there from 2007 to May 2009 . Origen is an agricultural servicing company operating mainly in South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. He also managed farms in Zimbabwe for over 15 years, farming a variety of crops.


Harvey has a Bachelor of Business Science from the University of Cape Town.
